More info about Porto/Port: Port, mainly known as Porto in Belgium, is a fortified wine from Portugal, more specifically from Dourodal in north-east Portugal. The alcohol content is between 18 and 20 percent. Port is usually served as either an aperitif or digestif. Sometimes it is served as a dessert wine. The sweet taste of Port is achieved by adding extra alcohol, which prematurely halts the fermentation process and not all the sugar is converted into alcohol. There are different types of Port but on our website you will find mainly exceptional (old) 'Vintage Ports' including 'Single Quinta Vintage Port' (originating from one vineyard and after strict quality control also outside the vintage years established by the IVDP), 'Late Bottled Vintage Port' (Ruby, 4 to 6 years in oak barrels), 'Colheita' (=Tawny from one good harvest year, matured for at least seven years in wooden barrels). Often the harvest year 'depending on the obligation) as well as the bottling year is specified on the bottle. Unless the bottle is opened Vintage Port can be laid down for an extremely long time. it is recommended that Vintage Port be decanted first (it continues to mature in the bottle) and that it is then drunk within 48 hours. There are also special pliers (port pliers) to remove (potentially very- old corks without any risk. Besides Ruby Port (Young Ruby, LBV, Crusted), Vintage Port (Single Quinta Vintage Port) and Tawny (Aged Tawny, Conheita, Garrafeiraport) there is naturally white port too as well as rosé port since 2009.
