More about Priorat (DOQ/DOCa): Priorat is a Catalan DOQ (Denominació d'Origen Qualificada). In other words a protected designation of origin with a quality guarantee. There are just two regions in Spain (Rioja & Priorat) that bear this highest Spanish qualification. The region produces many stunning, powerful wines. The traditional grape variety here is the Garnacha tinta. For red wine Garnacha Peluda, Cariñena, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah are also used. Traditional red wines used to be produced from a single grape variety. Today they are made from blends as in the French Bordeaux. The vineyards are often located on steep hills in the form of terraces. The region caused a great deal of furore in a short space of time, and rightly so, which meant that prices rose sharply.
