More info about Bordeaux wines: the world-famous wine region of the Garonne, Dordogne & Gironde. The Bordeaux wine region is further divided in geographic terms into: Haut-Médoc, Listrac Médoc, Margaux, Médoc, Pauillac, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Julien in the north-west; (Côtes de) Blaye and (Côtes de) Bourg in the north-east; Canon Fronsac, Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux, Lalande-de-Pomerol, Lussac-Saint-Emilion, Pomerol, Puisseguin-Saint-Emilion, Saint-Emilion (Grand Cru) & Saint-Georges Saint-Emilion in the east; Barsac, Cérons, Graves (Supérieur), Pessac-Léognan & Sauternes in the south-west and, for example, Cadillac, Loupiac and Entre-Deux-Mers in the south-east. You will find more info on bordeaux.com. The most commonly used grape varieties are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon & Cabernet Franc. Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle are used to produce white wine. In 1855, a classification was introduced to indicate extremely good wine, the so-called Grand Crus. The classification used depends on the region. The classification for Médoc and Sauternes is different than that used for Graves. The classification has only been reviewed once (after the promotion of Château Mouton Rothschild). There is also the 'Crus Bourgeois' and 'Crus Artisans' (family domains) classification. These are reviewed on a regular basis.
