2007 Château Magdelaine - St Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé

| MAGDELAINE | 2007 | Mc

Chateau Magdelaine is an old school Bordeaux and classic St Emilion, made from mostly merlot with a tad of Cabernet Franc. The estate was bought by JP Moueix (that name ought to ring a bell) in 1952 and was merged with neighboring estate Bel Air Monange in 2012.

The 2007 is dark purple and fairly concentrated, the color clearly expresses its youth. Moderate concentration of aromas as well, dark and red fruit accompanied by a spicy and oaky touch, vanilla and a whiff of coffee. On the palate again good mouth feel, perhaps a bit low on acidity which makes me doubt its moderate ageing potential, but decent tannic structure and lovely supple warmth.

This is a very decent St Emilion, no wine for thrill seekers but good material for those looking for an accessible decent glass of claret that just reached its drinking window and will still keep a few years.
