1983 Château Troplong Mondot - St Emilion Grand Cru Classé

The 1983 Troplong Mondot had a medium tuilé color, mostly browns with just a tad of red left. The first aroma’s rising from the glass were very evolved and tertiary with gamey, meaty scents in the forefront. Later on it started to open up more and nice elegant smells were noticeable, a little jammy red fruit, sweet spices (licorice) and caramel, rolling tobacco, black tea and a bit of tar as well with the autumnal and animalistic aromas now trailing behind. The taste was also a rollercoaster: at first completely out of balance with attacking sharp acidity and a bone dry finish, but given enough time to breathe everything fell nicely into place. In my glass it was perfect after 4 hours, nicely balanced and good length, nothing exceptional but overall a very good performance with the warm sweetness again showing here and lovely soft tannins in the finish.
