1964 Volnay Clos de la Pousse d’Or - Domaine de la Pousse d’Or

| Volnay Clos de la Pousse | 1964 | La Pousse d’Or

Today we opened up a great bottle of Burgundy thanks to having a completely tattered, barely legible label : 1964 Volnay Clos de la Pousse d’Or by Domaine de la Pousse d’Or (Bousse or Pousse, the B and P in the name changed throughout the years) and I felt asone of the lucky few, being able to taste such an exceptional Burgundy is truly a treat.

The level in the bottle was perfect for its age (about 3cm below the cork) and so was the color : vibrant cherry red with gradual bricking towards the edge. The bouquet was simply exquisite : very fine and delicate with still lots of ripe red fruit (red and dark cherry, red berries and raspberry compote) intermingled with woody notes (undergrowth, sandalwood, wet tea leaves) and even a delicate feminine floral bouquet (wild roses and violets). All of this easily detectable, with the slightest swirl of the glass all the aroma’s rise up like an expensive perfume, opening up layer after layer, revealing its complexity and different components as if telling a story with me hanging on to every word.

This raised very high expectations which were more than amply fulfilled after tasting.More of the ripe and succulent fruit with still lively freshness, certainly not overpowering but more of the same feminine delicateness on the palate, great balance overall, with softened tannins at the end, smooth and silky as the worn velvet elbow pads on your high school math teachers outdated waistcoat. Definitely one to remember!
