1975 Inglenook Petit Syrah

For this we tried an Inglenook Petite Sirah during lunch, from 1975, the vintage when Francis Coppola first came to the estate. The wine is dense looking, still dark cherry in color, seems much younger than it actually is, so far so good.Aroma’s leap from the glass, even without giving it time to breathe there’s instant spices and soft fruits, mostly sweet smelling, with predominantly cloves, licorice and a dash of pepper and (crème de) cassis. Even after so long there’s still sweet tannins, very nicely integrated and velvety with enough acidity to balance it out. Long lasting and concentrated taste, a real joy. Conclusion : when well made Petit Syrah can last for decades and provide tons of drinking pleasure for those looking for a concentrated, fleshy wine.
