2004 Le Pergole Torte - Montevertine
This to me is a stunning example of what sangiovese can be at its best.
Deep garnet to cherry red in color and even straight after opening an amazing complex bouquet leaps from the glass. Hard to decide which is more dominant with the smells of oak and inscence, red cherries, berries, rhubarb and even ripe cherry tomatoes all competing for attention. After a while in the glass some light tobacco and garrigue also starts to add to the complexity. And when drinking this it's not only the great balance which makes this wine one of my favorites, but the incredible depth and aftertaste that lasts well over half a minute. Truly a great wine and perfect match to roasted meat and grilled vegetables.
