1964 Château Troplong Mondot - St Emilion Grand Cru Classé

1964 Troplong Mondot - with a level a bit lower than perfect (Very Topshoulder) and a cork completely saturated and spongy this was quite a challenge, see pic. In the glass, this was dark and concentrated claret, almost auburn with not much of red left in it, which was actually one of the only things that gave away it’s age. The lovely fragrance of granddad’s cigar case went well with the soft remnants of blueberry jam and blackberry pie. Given a little more time this wine gave off a spiciness and warmth of a Bedouin camp in the middle of the desert, remarkable. A great wine, with impeccable balance, clear and precise but more the bodybuilder than a mannequin.
