1997 Château Mouton Rothschild - Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classé

The wine is very dark cherry red in the glass, nicely concentrated with fat colored legs.1997 is supposed to be one of the lesser vintages for Mouton or even Bordeaux in general, but surprisingly there’s a very concentrated perfume rising up nonetheless. There’s juicy ripe dark fruit, cassis and brambles, very sweet and a bit smoky and woody (cedar). There’s also an oddly mineral aspect (wet pavement, pencil lead) and already a hint of more evolved odors giving it a more earthy and meaty character. This Mouton is drinking particularly well : it’s medium bodied but incredibly supple and accessible, lacking perhaps just a tad of acidity but nicely compensating that with a remarkable strength and great staying power. Definitely exceptional length for a wine from this vintage.
