1970 Château Canon La Gaffeliere - St Emilion Grand Cru Classé
This left banker was already quite old, but performed very good.. Also a Topshoulder, but here the color was much lighter red with a pomegranate edge. Right after opening and pouring it gave off a whiff of a brand new beach ball, that scent of plastic or vinyl that I sometimes find in older Cabernets. As soon as this dissipated we were rewarded with lingering odors of dark jammy fruit, cigar and tobacco, wet autumn leaves and oddly a buttery nuance. The balance here was good, it came off as a bit light perhaps but overall a very supple and meaty wine.
