1975 Château Montrose - St Estephe 2 Ième Grand Cru Classé
Maybe Pomerol or at least right bank would have been a better choice, but this bottle had a descending cork and level Topshoulder so it was better suited for a tasting than commercial ends. The slightly lower level and age clearly showed in the color, a dark mahogany that didn’t forecast a lively, vibrant wine. First impressions were cloves and some vegetal tones like geranium, shortly after followed by venison with a tinge of perfume I can only describe as grandmother’s fur coat. This wine had a sharp acidity at first which mellowed out a bit later on without disappearing completely, unfortunately a hollow mid-section and a very tough and dry finish, not uncommon for 75’s. A bottle in perfect condition probably would have performed better though I fear the toughness would still be there.
